Evaluation

The name of my magazine is Reverb and I chose this name because I pictured the music being featured in the publication as reverberating around the target audiences’ head.

Who would be the audience for your media product and how does it represent particular social groups?

The target audience for Reverb is young people, both male and female, aged between 19 - 25 years of age in the socio-economic group AB. This type of person historically has a good disposable income and is often well travelled. Because of this, I have featured current acts that appeal to that age of reader and, more importantly, who can also afford the tickets to the concerts. This type of audience often puts great store by being the first to spot a new talent or know who is up and coming and to satisfy this I have featured an article about a new singer. Also by offering insights into dance clubs around the world and a competition to New York I hope to tap into the target audience’s desire to travel and try out new places.
I also have Tinie Tempah on the contents page who is a black male so it shows that there is no social divide in the dance music scene despite a large number of artists being white.

How did you attract/address your audience?

To attract my target audience I used a large photo on the front cover of an established band who are currently very popular. Additionally I used the bright colours in the fonts to highlight what was being featured inside the magazine hopefully tempting them to buy it. Another method of attracting my audience was the highlight of a competition with a great prize. Everybody likes the chance to win something for free. I also used a woman as my artist to appeal to the female audience and to show that in the world of dance music, women are just as big as men.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product?

Magazines are distributed by publishing companies (e.g. EMAP or IPC) that have numerous titles, targeted at a variety of niche and target audiences.  Explain this with detailed reference to specific examples and similar titles.

EMAP are smaller than IPC and IPC already have a magazine about music in NME s they have prior knowledge of where to market it, I think IPC would be better suited to market my magazine due to this fact.

Magazines make money through selling (cover sales) but mainly through advertising.  Explain this with specific examples of who might advertise in your magazine and why (target audience, image of magazine, suitability of product, etc.)

I would have Ministry of Sound advertise in my magazine as they release drum ‘n’ bass and dubstep albums. Another brand I would get to advertise in my magazine would be soundcloud, an website that lets up and coming Dj’s upload their music to the internet and listen for free.  These two brands I chose as it is helping Dj’s within the scene and spreading the genre.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The magazine uses many codes and conventions of magazine design, the colours i have used;white, black and yellow follows the '3 colour rule' which is often seen with music magazines, they like to keep only 3 colours because it makes the magazine look clean and tidy but follows a good theme. i chose a photo for the front cover which is relatively dark so my cover lines show up well on some parts in white and others in black. For these cover lines i used a font called Orater Standard, this font is clean and crist and the letters are set quite far apart, i used this to appeal to the more sophisticated reader which is most likely to spend the £4.20 on the magazine.

What have you learn about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt that the technologies are actually the last part in the process of constructing a magazine. The look of the design of all the pages but particularly the front cover, the fonts and colours that are used are hugely important as is the front cover photo that is used to tempt possible readers. In many ways the technologies used to put the magazine together are the easiest parts of the process.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel your have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

In the process of constructing the magazine I have greatly increased my knowledge of Adobe Photoshop specifically how to manipulate the technique of using different layers to get the final product looking as I wanted. I have also learnt about, and how to use, Adobe Indesign and i have spent a long while looking at tutorials on the internet on how to do certain things in the software, one of the hardest things to find out to do was the blocks behind the featured artists on my front cover. i spent a long time finding out how to add a fill specifically behind the text, until i realized that i could just draw a box and duplicate he layer multiple times to get the desired effect much easier.
